A graduate in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, John received his law degree from the University of Tennessee. After three years as an attorney with the Internal Revenue Service, he earned a Masters of Law in Taxation degree from New York University. John concentrates his practice in Wills, Trusts and Estates, Estate Planning and Administration, corporate and business matters.

He was in the first group of lawyers certified as a Board Certified Specialist in Estate Planning & Probate Law. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel. He has served as president of the East Carolina Estate Planning Council and served on a variety of bar committees for estate tax and administration issues. John drafted several legislative initiatives. He has been recognized in Best Lawyers in America, Super Lawyers and The Legal Elite.

Now retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Judge Advocate General Department Reserve of the United States Air Force, John is active in community affairs. He served as a Scoutmaster and a member of the Eagle Scout Review Board. In addition to acting as director for several private companies, John has served on the Wayne County Economic Development Commission, Goldsboro Committee of 100, the Goldsboro Arts Council and the Airport Authority. He is the chairman of the Endowment Committee for Tuscarora Council of St. Stephens Episcopal Church. He is a member, lay reader and former vestryman of St. Stephens Episcopal Church. For his efforts, John was awarded the Silver Beaver, The Presidential Eagle Scout Award of Merit, as well as several Air Force Meritorious Service and Commendation Medals.
